    Weaving Together
    Sep 9, 2026 Projects
Immersion in creativity can bring us closer to our inner selves by letting us observe them from the outside and cultivate greater self-awareness. Art has the power to open our minds, connect across cultural differences, and understand shared values (07-05-2021. “Art and empathy: Four thought leaders explain the connection.”). Art can be a powerful way for us to gain a better understanding of human emotions and stories. It gives us a unique lens into artists’ inner worlds.

    From Power to Empowerment
    Sep 8, 2026 Projects
The From Power to Empowerment project aims to give youth workers concrete tools to identify and deconstruct the often invisible power dynamics in their professional and social environments. When these dynamics are not recognized, they fuel inequalities, hinder emancipation, and limit the participation of the most marginalized young people. The objective is to contribute to fairer, more inclusive, and more equal environments within the field of youth work.

Voices of the Earth: 3C Skills for Youth Workers (Clay · Communication · Community)
    Jun 27, 2026 Projects
We put a handful of clay in people’s hands, not just to make, but to speak and listen with their whole selves. Voices of the Earth strengthens everyday youth work by training practitioners to combine Clay · Communication · Community in one practical toolkit. We will: (a) equip youth workers with safe, low-cost clay/earth activities (no kiln, local materials) that double as tools for reflection, emotional literacy and group cohesion, (b) improve facilitation, listening, feedback and de-escalation so youth groups can speak, be heard and repair tensions…

Understanding the Pluriverse | The New Pirate Economy
    May 23, 2026 Blog
    by Prisca Braga
Written by Prisca Braga | Reading Time: 12 mins When new pirates arrive at Adventures of the Valparaíso , they are often curious about how we organize our daily learning. Many come from institutional education systems built entirely around competition, individual testing, linear metrics of success, and a hyper-specialized drive toward market productivity. However, we reject its underlying premise here.

    Practical Regeneration - a Toolkit
    May 10, 2026 Blog
    by Prisca Braga
Written by Prisca Braga | Reading Time: 10 mins If you follow alternative economics or ecological activism, you have likely noticed a major shift in vocabulary. Words like “sustainability” and even “circular economy” are increasingly giving way to a much deeper imperative: Regeneration. But what does regeneration actually mean when we strip away the marketing buzzwords? Today we will work with a handbook titled Tools for Regenerative Practice: 30 Frameworks, Exercises and Methods in Service of Human and Planetary Flourishing provides a nice blueprint.

Bioregionalism in Practice: Transitioning the Valparaíso from Water to Soil
    May 6, 2026 Blog
    by Prisca Braga
Written by Prisca Braga | Reading Time: 6 mins In our first post , we introduced the core compass of our organization: the New Pirate Economy , which anchors us in frameworks such as post-growth/degrowth, post-development, the pluriverse, political ecology, and socio-economic regeneration. But to understand how we actually practice these ideas, it helps to look at our own history. For many years, our actual office and headquarters was a ship navigating the Amsterdam canals. Today, our main base is on land in Oostzaan, in a farm.

What is the New Pirate Economy (And Why the World Needs It Right Now)
    Apr 16, 2026 Blog
    by Prisca Braga
Written by Prisca Braga | Reading Time: 5 mins The polycrisis and the birth of new ways of existing The world is currently drifting through what is called a “polycrisis”. While mainstream institutions often treat climate change, economic inequality, and socio-political breakdowns as isolated technical problems to be fixed with better policy, decolonial thinkers view them as symptoms of a deeper civilizational collapse.

To enable youth workers to facilitate these kinds of projects, we realized a need for further training. Sailing across the world!
    Dec 12, 2025 Projects
We are an international community exploring new ways of living, sharing, and exchanging in a world of transition. What once began as a ship-based initiative (with the Valparaíso ship) has evolved into an ethereal ship: a living network of people, stories, knowledge, and practices that moves beyond physical borders while remaining deeply rooted in place. Since 2013, our foundation has grown from an artist hub that hosted over 1,000 international volunteers in Amsterdam's harbor to a platform for learning, co-creation, and cultural exchange.
