In 2018, we brought The Trade Tent to six public events, from a maritime festival in Brest and the Vrijland festival to community spaces in Amsterdam like the Vondelbunker and OCCII. The setup was simple and face-to-face: we offered a physical object, and in return, people gave us a story, a memory, or an experience they wanted to share. They left with the object as a prompt, along with an open invitation to pass the practice on by trading an object of their own for someone else’s story. Some of those conversations continued on Facebook. People told us the experience stuck with them and shifted how they thought about value, turning a simple item into a bridge into someone else’s life. The tent operated as a social installation, driven entirely by the people who stepped inside. Storytelling was the core artistic medium, grounded in our movement, the New Pirate Economy, and in the principles we still hold: post-growth, regenerative economies, post-development, community building, and measuring life by what we share rather than what we sell. Our social-artistic experiment, Currency of Stories, builds directly on that intervention.
